WHAT’S
  LUPERIA GIN ?

A GROUP OF 4 MATES, ONE WOMAN AND THREE BOYS...
ALL FROM THE AREA OF LA LOUVIèRE

... but also very active. If you mix up the active and festive spirit with a passion for a lot of good things, you will get it : Luperia Gin.

But what is
that name?
LUPERIA?

La Louvière was the name of a farmer (La Grande Louvière of which the chapel is still to see) which was built on the land of Saint-Vaast, that gave birth later to the current city La Louvière. Nevertheless, that name is the result of a lot of changes...

The famous abbey of Aulne had along the two rivers of Thiriau important characteristics named "Menaulu" or "Meneilut" in the 12th century charts. This word from Roman origin (meigne au lieu = the place of the wolf) became in Latin "Luperia" in 1157 and "Lovaria" in 1168. The Latin concept was changed into "Lovière" in 1217, "Le Lovière" in 1284 and finally "La Louvière". It is important to know that at that time, the main territory was only a plot of an old coal forest made of dark woods and wild nature. It was, of course, a favourite place for wolves and game, which were chased by Lords.

When the four friends started the project of making their own gin, they chose one of the old names related to their city. Why ? First, because they are very attached to their region. Secondly, because they wanted a name associated with "La Louvière" but at the same time, they did not want the label to be recognizable.

Time, reflexion, experiments, discussions, ... were absolutely necessary between the idea of starting the drink and the first bottle of gin. These friends wanted a fresh fruity gin but with a flavour of juniper berries.
As a distillery was essential, the team turned to Dr. Clyde distillery (well-known in the area of Liège) and after 30 experiments, the four friends came to an agreement on a gin made of citrus based only on fresh fruit :
juniper berries and grapefruit (not exactly because there is also some lemon and bergamot in the mixture). As far as the proportions are concerned, that will remain a secret !
Yes, you read it right ! 30 different experiments were made to produce their gin as they liked and to launch the production. It goes without saying that they wanted a gin that could be drunk neat.
